The vision of the city is by 2030, 25% of travel will be by autonomous vehicles. That is, vehicles that will not have a driver.
The program includes cars, buses and even helicopter-taxis.
All this because in the future it is certain that autonomous vehicles will be safer than today. This is because the human factor is responsible for more than 90% of accidents.
So far in Dubai several tests have been done for such vehicles. Autonomous buses are inspected on existing routes and cars were tested on the roads. Tests are also carried out on small helicopters that will transport passengers like taxis. As for the helicopter taxis, the inspections started a few years ago and are still ongoing. It is estimated that the system will be implemented in five years as the relevant technology is developing rapidly.
When these systems start working, they will have an operator in case something unexpected happens. But when their operating systems are secure, they can be completely autonomous.
Recently, a presentation of such vehicles took place and awards were given by the authorities to the companies that presented the best results.
Dubai has emerged as the city with the best transport infrastructure, has the largest autonomous metro system and has one of the lowest road accident rates in the world.
