It was a kidnapping of a 14-year-old girl from her home while she was sleeping at night in 2002 in the small town of Salt Lake in the USA.
It all started when the mother of little Elizabeth Smart gave $ 5 to a man who looked like a beggar. He asked her if she needed any help at home to come to work and she told him what he could do.
That’s how he met the little girl. So one night with his partner, he entered the house and kidnapped the girl with the threat of a knife. With this fact, the little girl’s sister woke up but from her panic she could not report it directly to her parents, until the next morning.
For nine months the little girl lived in a secluded area just a few kilometers from her house with the couple who abducted her. He experienced bad situations, such as rape, forced alcohol consumption and forced watching adult movies.
During her abduction, the couple also tried to abduct Elizabeth’s cousin from her home, but to no avail. This was repeated with another girl, but fortunately they did not succeed.
In time, Elizabeth’s sister recalled that the one who abducted her was the one who worked for a few days at their home after recognizing his voice. So the police drew his face and made it known. The police soon received a phone call from someone that he had seen him.
So the couple was soon arrested and the little one returned home.
The woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison and the man to life imprisonment. The woman was released on the condition that she undergo psychiatric treatment.
Elizabeth is now 33 years old and has written two books and created the Elizabeth Smart Foundation which fights against sexual violence.
