Vera Gedroits was a Russian doctor and writer.

She was the first female military surgeon in Russia, the first female surgeon and the first to serve as a doctor in the Imperial Palace of Russia.

She was born in 1870.

Although she was homosexual, she entered into a marriage in order to obtain a passport under another name so that she could leave the country.

She went to Switzerland to study medicine. She graduated in 1898 and then returned to Russia due to illness of her family.

She was concerned about the low standards of hygiene in Russia and made recommendations for their improvement.

During the war between Russia and Japan she succeeded at many surgeries and for this she received many medals.

She then served as a physician in the royal court and trained many nurses.

She also served on the battlefields during the Russian Revolution.

Her next step was to go to Kiev where she worked as a doctor and academic. In 1921 he was hired to teach pediatric surgery at a city institute. Two years later she was appointed professor of medicine.

In 1930, however, she resigned and devoted herself to writing autobiographical novels.

She died in 1932 of uterine cancer.
