There have been torrential rains recently in western Canada and in the US state of Washington. Experts report that in just two days it rained as much as it should in a month.

This created floods that destroyed roads, piled up mud and forced thousands to flee their homes.

The result is that many people are missing and more than 1,200 livestock and poultry farms are destroyed. These farms covered half of the dairy, egg and meat needs in an area of 5.2 million inhabitants.

Many farm owners tried to save their animals by using small boats and jet skis.

There is now an urgent need to find food and water for the surviving animals. Some were unfortunately abandoned because there was no chance of them being saved. Thousands more liters of milk were dumped because trucks could not reach the area to transport it.

The tragic irony is that this happened in less than six months when there was a very high temperature that caused fires that killed more than 500 people and burned an entire town.
