Russia has recently destroyed a rocket satellite launched from Earth. It was a test to test its weapons.
The United States, for its part, accuses Moscow of endangering the International Space Station (ISS) and that this action was dangerous and irresponsible, leaving behind debris. They also said they had not been informed by Russia about the test. Concerns have been raised that Russia is developing weapons for space, from lasers to satellites that could damage other satellites. They say Russia wants to militarize space.
France was quick to blame Russia for the activity, as was Germany, which has called for measures to increase security.
Russia, however, says it has successfully conducted a test where its system was able to accurately achieve its goal. In particular, it hit a satellite that has been in orbit around the Earth since 1982. It also denies that the debris endangered other facilities. They also said that this test was well designed and was only intended to improve the capabilities of their weapons. Finally, they reported that it was carried out on the basis of international law.
