Hypatia was a Greek philosopher, astronomer and mathematician. She taught philosophy, mathematics and astronomy in Alexandria.

She was born in Alexandria in 370 and was the daughter of Theon who was also a mathematician and astronomer. From an early age she received a very good education in Athens and Italy.

Many of her students were descendants of the upper classes and the aristocracy of her city but also from other parts of the Mediterranean.

She was beautiful and simply dressed and was a respectable person who exerted influence not only in Alexandria but also in Constantinople and Syria.

She edited works of geometry, algebra and astronomy. Unfortunately, none of her works survive, but there are references to them.

In 415 the Church called her a witch and she was executed. The executor may have been the archbishop.
