Jocelyn Bell Burnell was a Northern Irish astrophysicist responsible for detecting the first pulsar in radio waves.

She was born in Belfast in 1943.

She studied at the University of Glasgow where she obtained a BA in Physical Philosophy in 1965.

She also received a PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1969.

During her career she worked at the University of Southampton, University College London and the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh.

She shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with astronomer Martin Ryle.

She also had social activities mainly in the improvement of positions and increasing the number of women in professional positions.

Her religious work is related to her actions as a member of the Quakers (Christian Church).

She married in 1968 and had a son. In 1993 she received a divorce.

She received many honors and helped build a radio telescope.
