Its name is Shicheng, which means City of Lions, and it has been underwater since 1959 when it was deliberately flooded.
Today it is a sight for divers to study a 600-year-old city that was forgotten until recently. They call it the ‘Atlantis of the East’.
It is located at a depth of 40 meters in Qiandao Lake in Zhejiang Province.
The authorities flooded the area so that the Xin’an Dam and its hydroelectric station could be built. Then 300,000 people moved.
The city is known for its stone statues representing lions, dragons, palm trees and historical inscriptions.
