The massacre at Wounded Knee was the last conflict between Americans and Indians. 300 Indians were killed by American soldiers, among them women and children.
It all started in 1888 when a religious sect spread among the Indians. Their belief was that the earth would be destroyed by the sinful habits of the whites and by the industrial revolution.
They believed that they had ‘sacred garments’ that if they wore them, the whites could not kill them. And with these clothes they would ‘cleanse’ the Earth of white people.
The authorities of the countries were alarmed knowing the intentions of the Indians, so in 1890 they banned the sect. The Indians did not obey. Then the army took over to arrest the leaders of the sect.
In a camp of 350 Indians, 500 soldiers went. The Indians were wearing their ‘sacred clothes’ so they did not worry, putting up a strong resistance.
A regular battle broke out and in one hour 300 Indians were killed and 50 wounded.
