It was a failed coup that Hitler attempted in Munich in 1923 to seize power in Germany.

It lasted the 8th and 9th of November.

It all started with Germany’s defeat in World War I. The claims of the victors against Germany, collapsed its economy. The country asked for payment facilities in reparations, which was rejected. France still invaded Germany’s Ruhr region militarily, and was exploiting it herself.

These prompted the German people to unite and prepare for action after they were literally starving. Thus extreme and paramilitary groups gained many supporters. Hitler’s party came to list 55,000 members.

Hitler took the opportunity to attempt to seize power in Munich, during a gathering of leaders of the Bavarian government in a beer hall. At gunpoint he forced these leaders to hand over power to him.

But the next day, when he sought to move towards Berlin to do the same, to overthrow the Federal Government, he found the police opposite him and a real battle began. The tally was 16 Hitlerites killed as well as 4 policemen.

Hitler and other party members were imprisoned. There he realized that the best way to win power is through constitutional means, so he changed his way of fighting.
