Why does it cost so much to replace a Bugatti key?

The cost of replacing a Bugatti key is between 13,000 and 14,000 US dollars.

We certainly understand that this car key cannot be a standard key. Specifically, it is called ‘Speed Key’ and with this the owner can ‘prepare’ the car for its top speed. This is done by placing the key in a special slot next to the driver’s seat.

Normally the car is set to be able to travel up to 380km/h. Placing the key there, the car receives the signal and its computer starts checking that everything is safe to allow the car to travel up to 420 km/h, which is its top speed.
