Its high cost is due to extensive research and development for stealth and combat technologies, advanced composite materials that reduce weight, increase strength and maneuverability as well as intricate manufacturing processes. Also strict quality standards from Lockheed Martin for testing and inspection were used.
Even today, 3 decades after its launch, it remains futuristic and has unmatched capabilities.
When it was designed, many of its concepts were never attempted before. It was way ahead of its time. Its special stealth design and the internal weapon bay were major innovations. Its radar absorbent materials as well. The same applies for its advanced sensors. It was designed to limit radio frequency emissions, infrared signatures and acoustic signatures.
The plan was to produce 750 planes but eventually only 190 were manufactured. That drone the cost per unit even higher.
