He is a national hero of Italy and a fighter in the Italian War of Independence. He also participated in the Uruguayan Civil War for the Colorado Party. His nickname was ‘hero of the Two Worlds’.
He was born in Nice, France in 1807.
From a young age he participated in the revolutionary organization ‘New Italy’ that fought for the unification of Italy.
In 1834 he participated in a failed revolution in Piedmont.
Then he went to Brazil to participate in the independence struggle. There he met his wife whom he married in 1842. A year before they went together to Montevideo. Together they had 4 children.
In 1848 he returned to Italy. The first war against the Austrian Empire was a failure. The second succeeded and created the Kingdom of Italy.
He was elected a member of the Italian parliament.
He married twice more and had 4 more children.
He received many awards and was an admiral, a lieutenant general and a writer.
He died in 1882.
