He was an American physician, educator and epidemiologist.

He was born in 1928.

In 1950 he graduated from Oberlin College. 4 years later he received his MD from the University of Rochester

In 1960 he earned a MPH degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.

From 1967 to 1977 he worked to eradicate smallpox (infectious disease caused by variola virus) and he launched international childhood vaccination programs.

From 1977 to 1990 he was Dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Later he played a leading role in instigating national programs for public health preparedness.

In 1951 he got married and had 3 children.

He passed away in 2016 after fracturing his hip. At his death he was Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh and Distinguished Scholar at the UPMC Center of Health Security.

17 universities conferred honorary degrees to him.
