She was a French lawyer, politician and writer who fought for women’s rights and the legalization of abortion.
She was born in 1927 in Tunisia to a poor family.
She studied law and philosophy at the School of Political Sciences in Paris.
In 1967, she presided over the Tribunal to Investigate American Crimes in Vietnam.
In 1972, she defended as a lawyer a minor who had an abortion after being raped, winning the trial with the girl being acquitted. After this, public opinion was mobilized and in 1975 France decriminalized abortion.
In 1971, she founded the organization Choisir la Cause des Femmes.
In 1981, she was elected a deputy for the Socialist Party.
In 1985 and 1986 she was the French ambassador to UNESCO.
She wrote 15 books.
She was married twice and had 3 sons.
She died in 2020 in Paris.
