She was a Romanian track and field athlete, a two-time Olympic gold medalist (1960 and 1964) who broke the world record 14 times. She raised the high jump record from 1.71 meters to 1.91 meters.

She is considered the top high jumper and one of the top track and field athletes of the 20th century.

She was born in 1936.

She competed from 1951 to 1967. She took part in the Stockholm Games in 1958, in Belgrade in 1962, in West Germany in 1966 and in the Olympic Games in 1956, 1960 and 1964.

In 1967 she married her coach.

After her career as an athlete, she became a physical education teacher.

In Romania, she funded sports facilities that bear her name.

She died in 2016.
