Whale Valley is an archeological site in the Fayoum oasis of Egypt.
It is located 150 kilometers southwest of Cairo.
In 2005 it was considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The area was discovered in 1903 and is now considered a Protected Area by decree of the Prime Minister.
There are hundreds of fossils of extinct whale species. The great interest lies in the fact that these whales lived on land since they were reptiles and carnivores. Over the next thousands of years they evolved into ocean whales.
These fossils are still in very good condition. It also seems that there were sharks, crocodiles, sawfish, turtles and skates.
The largest skeleton found there was 21 meters long. Today, 15 species of mammals, 19 species of reptiles and 36 species of birds live there. There are still 15 species of desert plants.
