The V weapons were powerful weapons designed by the Germans during World War II. In German it was known as Vergeltungswaffen which means weapons of revenge.
They were designed to carry out strategic bombings against targets in Britain. A total of about 18,000 people were killed, mostly in London. However, when the Allies invaded European territory in 1944, these weapons were also used against targets in Belgium and France.
It consisted of the V-1 rocket, the V-2 rocket and the V-3 cannon.
It all started when the Germans vowed revenge for the Allied bombing of German cities.
That same year they deployed V-1 missiles in northern France along the coast. Their use began in June of the following year to plague London. Within the next three months, 1.5 million Englishmen fled the city to be saved. A total of 9,251 such missiles hit Britain.
As for the V-2 missiles, they were placed near The Hague, the Netherlands. The bombing of London began in September 1944. These missiles were very effective as they were supersonic and were not easy to shoot down by the British, which they did quite well with the V-1s. A total of 1,115 V-2 missiles were fired at Britain.
The bombing lasted until March 1945. The material damage was enormous as 20,000 houses were destroyed every day.
