Sigmund Freud was a distinguished Austrian physiologist, neurologist and psychiatrist. He was the founder of psychoanalysis that connects the patient with the psychiatrist through dialogue. He also developed innovative scientific theories and treatment techniques.

He was born in 1856 and was of Jewish descent. His family left Rhineland where he lived due to anti-Semitic persecution. So at the age of four he went to Vienna where he lived until 1938. Then he left there due to persecution by the Nazis and went to London.

At school he was an excellent and disciplined student.

In 1873 he began studying medicine at the University of Vienna. He also attended philosophy lectures.

His work focused on the following.

• Research in marine zoology.
• Research on nerve diseases such as cerebral palsy.
• Research on the clinical use of cocaine due to its antidepressant properties. It showed that it can be used for many medical purposes.
• He had success in the hypnosis method.
• Discover the oedipal complex.

The results he presented were quite extreme, some correct and some not so much and that is why he disagreed with many of his colleagues, but on the other hand he made several close collaborations.

He suffered from cancer for 16 years until he died in 1939.
