Veronica Guerin was an Irish journalist and police writer who fell victim to the country’s organized crime.
She was born in 1959 in Dublin. Young was distinguished for her athletic performance in many sports.
She studied accounting in Dublin and then worked in her father’s business. In 1983 she founded a public relations company.
She sided with the center-right party and was an aide to his leader, who has also served three times as prime minister.
In 1985 she married and had a son.
At the age of 31 she decided to become a journalist and collaborated with newspapers. Her acquaintances with the police helped her to investigate organized crime and drug trafficking, as well as to publish relevant articles.
Thus began the threats against her life. In 1995, someone knocked on her door and shot her in the leg. The police then offered to provide her with 24-hour protection but she refused because that would be an obstacle to her work.
Then the underworld began to threaten her for her son’s life.
But it all ended in 1996 when a passenger on a motorcycle passing by her car shot her six times.
Her assassination was considered an attack on democracy and this led police to arrest 150 people, seizure of drugs and weapons resulting in a 15% reduction in crime in the coming years.
Her funeral was covered live on public television.
There are two films about her life and action, Veronica Guerin and When the sky falls.
