Neuschwanstein is a 19th-century palace located on a hill in southwestern Bavaria in Germany.
It was built by Louis II of Bavaria with money from his property and not from public funds. He wanted it for a place to rest. Its construction began in 1869.
But he died in 1886 when it was completed and so then the building was opened to the public for a fee.
It is one of the most popular destinations in Europe with around 1.3 million visitors a year.
Today it is a world symbol of the Romantic era and since 2015 it is a candidate for a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
