This dam has been blocking the flow of the river for more than 100 years, which is why the country’s authorities decided to destroy it with the use of explosives.
So now the migratory crossings of the fish have been freed. This will result in an increase in fish populations but also in improving their health.
The dam was built in 1916 and was 7 meters high. For more than 50 years it did not serve any purpose.
In Europe there is a plan to remove small dams to free up 25,000 km of river passages by 2030.
The construction of dams in rivers prevents the travel of migrating fish. The transport of sediments and nutrients for the health of fish is still hindered and this is the reason why their population decreased by 90% from 1970 to 2016. And this has a negative impact on human life as fishing is reduced.
