NASA has created an electric propulsion system for a spacecraft

This spacecraft will begin its journey to the asteroid named Psyche, located between the planets Jupiter and Mars, in August 2022. This journey will take 3.5 years and is 2.4 billion kilometers.

Scientists believe that this asteroid is in the early stages of creating a rocky planet.

Initially, the journey will begin with the use of conventional rocket fuel, until it exceeds the Earth’s point of gravity, and then this innovative system will be activated. This is the first time such a system has been used beyond the Moon.

The fuel of the spaceship will be xenon gas and the necessary quantity for the voyage will be at 20% in relation to the usual fuels.

The impulse will be created by the use of electromagnetic fields which will be expelled by the atoms of the fuel. Although the thrust is very small, due to the fact that there is vacuum in space and there is no resistance to the movement of the spaceship, it will be able to reach a speed of 320,000 km / h.
