Lavredi Beria was a Soviet politician and head of Stalin’s Soviet security apparatus and secret services.

He was born in 1899 in Georgia, which belonged to the Russian Empire.

He was both deputy and head of the Stalinist purges for those considered saboteurs and insurgents. He wielded considerable influence during World War II when he commanded units to intimidate those whom the regime considered traitors.

He also commanded the forced labor camps, known as the Gulag. He also organized a network of surveillance and sabotage against the Germans.

Stalin also tasked him with overseeing the Soviet atomic bomb program and spying on the West.

After Stalin’s death he launched a campaign for liberalization. To achieve his goals he exercised irreconcilable cruelty.

In 1953 he was arrested and executed by his political opponents on charges of terrorism and treason.
