In 1605 AD a group of Catholics sought to assassinate King James I of England, his family and members of the aristocracy.

The aim was to blow up the British Parliament in London.

This was a consequence of tyrannical rule and harsh measures against Catholics by Protestants.

In a cellar in the building they collected 36 barrels of gunpowder. But they were worried about the possibility that there would be Catholics among the victims. Τherefore they sent a letter to a lord not to appear at the meeting. Suspicions were raised about this and searches began throughout the building.

The conspirators were exposed and sentenced to death by hanging.
