Rudolf Diesel was a German engineer and inventor, known for designing the diesel engine.
He was born in 1858 in Paris. His parents were Bavarian immigrants. But when war broke out between France and Prussia in 1870, his family, like many other Germans, were forced to flee. Then they settled in London. Then his mother, when he was 12 years old, sent him to stay with his uncle and aunt in Germany to learn German well.
In 1873 he enrolled in an industrial school and 2 years later received a scholarship from the Technical University of Munich.
In 1880 he graduated with honors and went to Paris. There he worked for the construction of an ice producing machine. A year later he became the director of the factory.
In 1883 he married and had 3 children.
In 1890 he moved to Berlin and worked on steam, thermal efficiency and fuel efficiency. With these works he was able to build a steam engine. But in one test the engine exploded and he was seriously injured. He was hospitalized for several months.
Following this adventure, he designed the diesel engine that bears his name. This made him a millionaire.
In his career he registered several patents.
In 1913, on a boat trip, he disappeared. There have been many speculations about his death.
