Black soup was the staple food of the ancient Spartans.

It was made from pork, blood, vinegar and salt. It was accompanied by barley bread, game, fish, cheese and figs.

To prepare it, after slaughtering the pig, they collected the blood and mixed it with vinegar. Then they would fry the meat and the fat and pour water into it until it boiled. Then they poured flour and slowly added the blood and vinegar mixture.

For the rest of the Greeks it was disgusting food. That is why the Athenians said that this is why the Spartans are the bravest, meaning that one must be very brave to be able to taste something like this.

The Spartans ate raw onions before a battle to increase their adrenaline.
