This device is built to enable the defender to engage targets such as small unmanned aircraft, rockets and small boats. In the case of boats, this laser can be aimed near its engine and propeller to immobilize it.
It was developed by the US Navy from 2010 to 2014 and is manufactured by Kratos Defense & Security Solutions. It has been in service since 2014.
By using an infrared beam it can hit its targets. Its big advantage is the very low cost per shot compared to rockets.
