IKAROS is a test bed of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, for future ion propulsion engines that also uses solar cells for electricity and move along by sails.

It was deployed in 2010.

It is the 1st successful spacecraft that uses solar sail in space. It is proved that it was accelerated through photons. It demonstrated the effect when individual light photons hit a solar sail. Each photon is small and generates small push but over time the accumulated energy from each one pushes the solar sail forward. That means that the pressure of sunlight will not need any fuel.

It is 14 meters wide.
