World leaders reached a new agreement to tackle climate change at a big UN meeting in Dubai. It was the 28th annual United Nation climate meeting to limit the climate change. It lasted from 30/11 to 12/12/2023. Around 200 nations were represented in the talks.
2023 was a year of extreme weather events when many climate records were broken.
Transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems, was agreed. Richer countries are expected to move away from coal, oil and gas. But the deal does not compel countries to take action at a specified timescale.
US, UK and EU, which are the most vulnerable to climate change, wanted more ambitious commitment. They want the capacity of renewable energy like wind and solar power to triple and the rate of energy efficiency to double by 2030.
Also calls existed on countries to accelerate low and zero-emission technologies like carbon capture and storage.
Nearly 100.000 politicians, diplomats, journalists and campaigners registered for the meeting making it the biggest climate conference ever held.
The world is on track for around 2.7 0C of warming by 2100.
