It was built in Hellisheidi of Iceland and started operating in May 2024.

It was manufactured by the Swiss company named Climeworks to suck planet-heating pollution out of the atmosphere like a giant vacuum. Its name is Mammoth.

Direct Air Capture or DAC is a technology designed to suck air and strip out the carbon using chemicals. The carbon then is injected deep beneath the ground, reused or transformed into solid products.

Climeworks plans to transport the carbon underground where it will be naturally transformed into stone. This process is called sequestration. The whole operation will be powered by clean geothermal energy.

It will be able to capture 36.000 tons of carbon annually.
