Nowadays they are popular for visitors in modern Turkey to relax in the waters.
They are also known as Pamukkale Antique Pool. Once it was the Greek city of Hierapolis.
In the past, Greeks, Romans and Phyrgians settled in the area. In the 13th century the city was abandoned and it was unknown until the 19th century when excavations began.
Hierapolis flourished in the area during the 2nd century B.C. Cleopatra was there when the region was administered to Mark Anthony.
Today it is believed that the waters are mineral-rich and have purported therapeutic benefits.
