The Rhine cuts deeply through the Rhenish slate mountains, meandering between hillside castles and fields of wine-producing grapes.

Idyllic villages, half-timbered houses and Gothic churches are added to the scene.

The main attractions are:

  • Festung Ehrenbreitstein: A fortress located 118 meters above the river. Apart of the fabulous views, there are also museums, restaurants, bars and cafes.
  • Burg Rheinstein: It was a romantic summer residency of the Prussian royalty.
  • Pfalzgrafstein: A castle built in 1326 that perches on an island in the middle of the river.
