It is a subtropical wetland ecosystem spanning 2 million acres in central and south Florida. It is surrounded by the cities of Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
- It provides drinking water for 1/3 of Floridians and irrigation for agriculture.
- It draws large numbers of birders, anglers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts.
- There live more than 360 bird species
- There we can see cypress swamps, wet prairie and mangroves.
- The area is visited also by migratory birds.
- There exist the Florida panther, the bottlenose dolphins and West Indian manatee.
- Alligators, crocodiles and 27 snake species.
- The plants are, the marshes, the cypress and the mangrove trees.
