It is a subtropical wetland ecosystem spanning 2 million acres in central and south Florida. It is surrounded by the cities of Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

  • It provides drinking water for 1/3 of Floridians and irrigation for agriculture.
  • It draws large numbers of birders, anglers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts.
  • There live more than 360 bird species
  • There we can see cypress swamps, wet prairie and mangroves.
  • The area is visited also by migratory birds.
  • There exist the Florida panther, the bottlenose dolphins and West Indian manatee.
  • Alligators, crocodiles and 27 snake species.
  • The plants are, the marshes, the cypress and the mangrove trees.
