It was a plane developed by McDonnell Douglas. It was an ambitious project aiming to create an all-weather carrier-based stealth bomber for the US navy.
It was developed in the 1980s to replace the A-6 Intruder. 5 billion USD were invested by the navy but it never took any flight. The program was mismanaged. It encountered severe technical, financial and strategic challenges. It was behind schedule and way over budget.
Weighing issues, cost overruns and composite material difficulties led to the project’s cancellation in 1991 by the Department of Defense.
