It was a former medieval fortress castle that was built to protect the toll station where the ships paid. It is of Gothic Revival style. 

It is near Koblenz on the bank of Rhine.

It was finished in 1259. Over the years it was extended several times.

In 1689 it was destroyed by the French.

It was rebuilt by the Crown Prince Frederic William in 1842.

Today it is a palace and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
