It was the largest place of worship in ancient Egypt and the ancient world and was dedicated to the Theban Triad.

It took its name from the nearby village of Karnak on the banks of the Nile.

It was founded in 3200 BC. It had smaller temples and sanctuaries around the main temple.

Today it is an open-air museum and is the 2nd most visited site in Egypt, after the pyramids.
