She was a German scientist specializing in algebra and theoretical physics.
She was born in 1882 in Bavaria and was of Jewish descent. Her father was a distinguished mathematician.
She studied mathematics and from 1922 to 1933 taught at a university. But this year with Hitler’s rise to power, she was expelled and immigrated to the USA. There she taught at a girls’ college.
Together with other mathematicians she founded a school of mathematics and contributed to the creation of modern algebra.
Einstein called her the greatest woman in the history of mathematics. She even formulated a theorem that bears her name.
In 1935 she underwent an operation to remove an ovarian cyst. She died 4 days after the operation.
