The Valley of the Kings is one of the most important areas of Ancient Egypt, as it hosts 63 tombs of pharaohs, officials and members of the royal family. Tutankhamun’s tomb is also located there.
It is a natural valley where for about 500 years, from the 16th to the 11th century BC. rock-cut tombs were built. These are decorated with scenes of mythology and religion. Inside are objects that were placed to provide comfort to the deceased in the afterlife.
Since 1979 it has been on the list of World Heritage Sites.
Most graves are not open for visits and those that are available are not open all the time. Tourists to the place amount to 4,000 to 5,000 annually.
