San Francisco de Quito, as the full name implies, is the capital of Ecuador.
It is built by the Gualababa river close to Pitsinca volcano, at an altitude of 2,850 meters. This makes it the second ‘highest’ capital in the world after the Bolivian capital, La Paz.
The population is about 2 million and it is the second largest city in the country after Guayaquil.
It was founded in 1534 and in 1978 was included in the list of World Heritage Sites.
