The initials IRST are for the Infrared Search and Track sensor.

This system has the ability to detect enemy aircraft, drones and missiles without the use of radar, with even greater efficiency.

Initially, although there were plans to integrate such systems into the F-22, it was postponed for financial reasons. But recently it has been announced that it will be implemented.

To do this, some technical difficulties must be overcome. If a shell is created on the outside of the aircraft to fit inside the system, then the aircraft’s ability to be ‘invisible’ on enemy radar is reduced. If it is integrated in the interior of the aircraft then it needs a major reconstruction and cooling system of the system. The third possibility is to coexist with another existing sensor.
