She was a German astronomer who discovered many comets.

She was born in 1750 and was the sister of the astronomer William Herschel with whom she collaborated and helped.

When she was 10 years old she fell ill with typhus and this affected her growth and her height which was only 1.3 meters. She still had vision loss in her left eye.

She received her first education from her father.

In 1772 she went to England with her brothers with whom she gave concerts.

Then her brother became interested in astronomy. Together they built telescopes and discovered the planet Uranus.

She was the first woman to receive a salary as a scientist and the first woman to hold a government position in England.

She received the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society and the Gold Medal of Science.

She died in 1848.
