Was a female warrior-samurai in pre-modern Japan. She was born in 1157 and her occupation was a Buddhist nun.

She was trained in the use of weapons to protect their household, family and honor in times of war.

Such women fought in battle alongside men.

There is doubt as to whether she existed and she appears in the epic tale ‘The tale of the Heike’.

She served only in 1182 at the Battle of Awazu, part of the Genpei War.

She passed away in 1247.
