It is a public urban park in Amsterdam covering 47 hectares.

It opened in 1865 and named after the poet Joost van den Vondel. There is a statue of his that was constructed in 1867.

It is open all-year having 10 million visitors annually.

It has on open-air theatre for music performances, a playground and several food service facilities.
