She was a Danish geophysicist who discovered the Earth’s inner core.

She was born in 1888 in Copenhagen. She studied mathematics at the University of Copenhagen and Cambridge.

She initially worked for an insurance company as she became interested in seismology.

In 1936 she began seismic research in New Zealand. There she discovered that the Earth’s core is made of iron and nickel and that it behaves like a solid. She understood that its temperature exceeds 5,000 degrees Celcius.

In 1953 she moved to the USA for further seismic research.

The seismic wave transitions were called Lehmann Discontinuity.

She was honored with many distinctions for her work.

She died in Copenhagen in 1993.
