Elena Cornaro was born in 1646 and was the child of a large Venetian family and had four siblings.
At the age of seven she began to be taught foreign languages, Latin and ancient Greek. She was also learning grammar and music. She later learned Hebrew, Spanish, French, Arabic and Chaldean.
She studied mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and theology.
She was the first woman to receive a doctorate and spoke seven languages.
She was still a musical talent and at the age of 17 she could sing, compose and play violin, harp and piano. Apart from that she was a mathematician and philosopher.
When she presented her study, the Church refused to give her a doctorate because she was a woman.
As a person she was deeply religious and after her studies she dedicated her life to charity, serving the poor and teaching at a university.
She also wrote many essays and dissertations of a philosophical and religious nature.
She died in 1684 at the age of 38 from tuberculosis.
